I grew up on the west coast of Scotland and graduated with a master’s degree in illustration from the Royal College of art in 2001. My fine artwork has been exhibited in galleries in the UK, Europe and the USA, and my illustrations have been used for animation, product design, editorial, advertising and publishing. My nostalgic, retro style draws on a variety of themes, including propaganda, children’s books, vintage advertising, stamps, trade cards and toys from around the world. Travel has been a major inspiration, most specifically the four years I spent living in China.

Artists Q & A

Any person who really helped you in your awesome artistic journey?

Working on Miso Pretty with Mitch Nash was a life-changing experience. Learned so much!! Thanks, Mitch!!

Listen to music while you work?Anything special in your work space that unleashes your creative juices?

I love listening to classical when I'm working, as words are too distracting and it allows me to dream.

What was your favorite thing to draw as a child? Why did that lodge in your head?

As a kid I was obsessed with everything horse-related. I would draw all the horses in my fantasy stables. My equally pony-crazed friend and I would rig up deflated inner tubes with rope stirrups and then sit opposite each other on each side of wall behind the brick posts of her driveway (the posts were the horses’ heads and necks). We’d sit there for hours bouncing along on our pretend gee gees, listening to the radio. Bliss!!!

On a project, what’s the rush like when everything clicks?

Aways a massive sense of relief to be out of “this is shit land.”

Where do you work? What’s your workspace like? Any objects you’ve had a long time?

I work in my living room, surrounded by books, plastic toys, religious paraphernalia and communist kitsch I’ve collected from my travels. My cats, Toyko and Baby Dave, are also a constant fluffy fixture.
