Artists Q & A

Any person who really helped you in your awesome artistic journey?

My Nana was really helpful. I was an unconventional kid and she told my folks that if I was left to do my own thing I'd be OK. So they supported me through Art College, and here I am.

What do you do when you need a break?

I usually go swimming at lunch times to think about what I did in the morning and come back with new ideas for the afternoon.

Where do your best ideas come from? (dreams, shower, museum, train?)

My best inspiration is from watching people. (Not in a creepy way, I think!) I just draw all the time. In the street, on the buses, in shops, how people dress, walk, interact. I live in a really richly diverse area with every nationality, age, shape, sexuality and style, etc. I take photos of signage and patterns and color combinations for reference too and draw them up later. I can't switch it off and it can be a bit overwhelming at times but it would be a shame to waste it all.

Did you have a magic moment when you knew you wanted art to be your life?

I knew from the start that I was going to make art all my life no matter what (and I couldn't do anything else anyway). But I only recently found out that not everybody knows what they're going to do. That was quite a shock and made me appreciate it more.

Where do you work? What’s your workspace like? Any objects you’ve had a long time?

After years in studios I realised I much prefer working from home, where I can live and make my own world all the time. It's 80% studio, 5% furniture, 15% childhood toys and comics for inspiration. I'm an '80's child and I throw NOTHING out.
