Blanca Gómez is an illustrator from Spain. She has worked in practically everything illustration-related, but she’s currently centered on writing and illustrating picture books. Her books and drawings enable her to convey what she’s unable to communicate in any other way.
ANY PERSON WHO REALLY HELPED YOU IN YOUR AWESOME ARTISTIC JOURNEY?
When I was a child I used to attend classes at a painting academy on Saturday mornings. The art teacher there showed me that the important thing wasn't drawing or painting perfectly, but experimenting, getting dirty and having a good time overall. I think that is what I do today.
LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK? ANYTHING SPECIAL IN YOUR WORK SPACE THAT UNLEASHES YOUR CREATIVE JUICES?
I'm always listening to music, I’ve never listened to a single podcast. I’m surrounded by garbage I find and beautiful things. Also, I have a coffee machine in my workspace.
WHERE DO YOUR BEST IDEAS COME FROM? (DREAMS, SHOWER, MUSEUM, TRAIN?)
My best ideas come from work. Very dull yet very real. I’m a bit obsessed, and when I start working on a new book or whatever, I can be thinking about it all day long — in dreams, in the shower, at a museum, on a train
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DRAW AS A CHILD? WHY DID THAT LODGE IN YOUR HEAD?
I loved a game I played with my mom. She used to draw quick. loose shapes on a piece of paper, and I had to complete them and transform them into something else. It’s something I still do sometimes.

HOW DOES CREATIVITY RUN IN YOUR FAMILY, EVEN IF IT’S NOT DESIGN-RELATED?
It’s nice and funny that both my parents now are doing some great things, I like to think because of my influence. My dad is making beautiful wooden stuff -- he made me a boat using my grandfather’s tools (my grandfather was a carpenter) -- and my mother is embroidering little genial abstractions out of her head, which is making me rather jealous!
